Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics is a specialty in dentistry which uses facial and oral prostheses to treat or correct appearance and functional problems caused by disease or injury. Prosthodontics is that branch of dentistry pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance and health of the patient by the restoration of natural teeth and/or the replacement of missing teeth and contiguous oral and maxillofacial tissues with artificial substitutes.
A Prosthodontist is differentiated from a regular dentist by an additional two to three years of training. Their duties include the creation, restoration, and replacement of human teeth with a variety of different procedures and applications. A Prosthodontist makes the examination of your teeth, jaw, gums and suggests the type of prosthesis treatment that is right for your particular case. This includes crowns, bridges, veneers, inlays, complete and removable partial dentures, dental implants, TMJ jaw problems, and traumatic injury reconstructive cases.
Dr. Castaneda graduated from the University of California, San Francisco in Prosthodontics in 1988. She has co-authored the textbook “Cardiomandibular Disorders”, chapters on: “Occlusion and it’s Role in TMJ Function and Pathology” and “Occlusal Equilibration” with Andrew Kaplan et. Al. W. D. Saunders (at press August 1991). She has completed an additional post-graduate training residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City and has completed a two-year program in prosthodontic training, making her a specialist.
